Hockey: Kent Edges Westy, TP Out-Slugs Taft and more

photoIt was another action-packed weekend in the rink. All eight Founders League hockey teams hit the ice for prime action,  including back-to-back games for Loomis on Friday and Saturday. Each team knows time is running out to grab the important victories to earn a spot in the Super 8. Here is a review of the weekend hockey action:

Friday: Taft 6-7 Trinity-PawlingScreen Shot 2014-01-26 at 1.37.04 PM

The Pride hosted Taft in a primetime, high-scoring affair in New York. The Rhinos made the long trek to Pawling looking for a much needed comeback victory after being routed by Kent on Wednesday.

The action broke loose in the third. After the Rhinos struck first just 10 seconds into the frame to make it, it looked like TP was deflated, and Taft was headed back to Wallingford with a “W.” But the Pride stuck with their game and opened the scoring barrage. Unbelievably, TP scored twice in just 6 seconds with goals from junior Connor McNamara and senior Jay Lamot. All of a sudden, the game had a blank slate.

Trinity-Pawling’s seniors stepped up to the plate, as the 4 unanswered goals for the Pride game them the 6-4 lead. They wouldn’t look back and over-powered Taft in a 7-6 game with no shortage of scoring.

Taft had initially come out strong, outplaying TP in the first to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room. However, there was plenty more scoring ahead for these squads.

In the second, the scoring continued at a steady pace, as Taft maintained their lead and took a 3-2 lead to the break with 18 minutes remaining in this contest.

The win gave TP their 4th consecutive victory, with a Monday matchup at Hotchkiss coming up.

Westminster 2-4 Kent

Kent took to the roads to battle Westminster in Simsbury for a matchup between two top teams. The Lions entered the game with an unreal 10-game win streak, dating back to the first matchup of the Avon Christmas Classic. Westy came into the game unbeaten in there previous 6 games (5-0-1) and looked to stay hot after a rough start to the season.

A back-and-forth contest, the Founders League foes slugged out a tough match all the way up to the 3rd period. Anthony Rinaldi opened the scoring in the first period, giving Kent a 1-0 edge after the first frame. After the Martlets tied it early in the second, Kent wasted no time regaining their lead. Anthony Ricciardi’s power play goal gave the Lions the 2-1 lead.

The seesaw would continue, as Westminster tied the game up at 2 before the 2nd period ended. However, Kent’s powerful offense was too much for Westy, adding the go-ahead goal, a snipe from Krisberg, in the third period and the empty-netter to take the 4-2 victory. Kent extends their win streak to 11 games, as Westminster’s is snapped at 4.

Kent will return home to face Taft on Wednesday. The Lions previously topped the Rhinos 6-1 in an earlier meeting in Wallingford.

Phillips Academy 2-2 Loomis Chaffee

The Pelicans took the long bus ride to Andover, MA for an inter-conference matchup against the boys from Phillips Academy.

Loomis got off to a shaky start; neither team was able to light the lamp in the first period. The struggles continued for the Pelicans as the Big Blue struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd period. The first 36 minutes of the game would close that way as it Loomis was struggling to find the back of the net.

After Rob Devaney found twine for Andover to make it a 2-0 game, the Pelicans began to fight back. Two quick goals for Loomis to end the 3rd period forced OT at a 2-2 tie.

Neither team was able to score in OT, and the game ended in a draw. Loomis, who trounced KO 11-0 on Wednesday, will host Williston on January 29th for a second straight inter-conference matchup.

Taft 6-1 Kingswood-Oxford

Coming off of a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to TP the previous day, the Rhinos traveled to West Hartford to take on a struggling opponent in KO.

Taft started off the scoring in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead over the Wyverns to the break. It appeared that KO’s struggle to score goals was going to haunt them yet again in this game.

However, Kingswood-Oxford hung in with Taft, tying the game at 1 in the second period and keeping the game knotted at the end of the second period. KO, looking for their first Housatonic League victory, was hanging in with the Rhinos.

Who knows what happened to Taft in the 2nd intermission, because the Rhinos stormed onto the ice in the 3rd. 5 goals in the third period, including one short-handed goal broke the game out in the final frame. Taft bounced back from their loss the previous night and took the victory over KO 6-1.

KO will look to bounce back with a game on Wednesday against Rye Country Day School, a team they beat 9-2 earlier in the season. On the other hand, Taft will look to use this momentum as they travel to top-ranked Kent on Wednesday.

Hotchkiss vs. Deerfield: Canceled due to power outage.

Avon 2-5 Choate

Choate traveled into Avon to take on the Winged Beavers last night in a highly-anticipated rivalry matchup.

Avon started off slow, as 2 goals from Joey Caffrey and Jeremy Germain gave Choate a quick 2-0 lead.

The second showed more of the same, as Avon was pounded in their own zone by the quick forwards of the Wild Boars. Eventually, the pressure amounted into third  and fourth goals for Choate, this time from David Barnish and Captain Owen Powers. It appeared that it was not the night for the Winged Beavers. 4-1 after 2.

In the third, Avon was able to mount a semi-comeback, after sophomore Liam Murphy scored another goal in the third to cut the Choate lead to 4-2. Unfortunately for Avon, Choate’s Germain scored his 2nd with under 3 minutes left to close the game out at 5-2.

Avon will look to respond when they host rivals Westminster on Wednesday afternoon.

For Choate, they play their second of a 4 game road trip when the travel to Hotchkiss on Wednesday.

Squash: Avon sweeps T.P., Choate falls to Hotchkiss and more

On Wednesday, the Founders League squash teams all either won, or lost, by large margins.  Avon Old Farms, Hotchkiss, Loomis-Chaffee, and Taft all took home nvictories on the day over other Founders League opponents.

Avon Old Farms 7-0 Trinity-Pawling

A strong and talented Avon Old Farms team swept Trinity-Pawling this past Wednesday.  All seven of Avon’s team members were able to defeat their opponent in three sets.

The Winged Beavers remain undefeated this season and will play Berkshire on Saturday.  The Pride will face Rye Country Day on Saturday where they hope to win their first match of the season.

Hotchkiss 6-1 Choate

The Bearcats came close to sweeping Choate this past week.  Billy Remsen (’14) of Choate was the lone victor for the Wild Boars in a five-game match that ran down to the wire.  Hotchkiss, however, was able to best the remaining members of Choate’s team.

Hotchkiss now improves to an impressive 11-1 record and have obtained an eight-game win streak over some competitive opponents.

The Bearcats will face Williston on Saturday, while Choate travels to a tri-meet where they will face-off against Founders League opponent Westminster.

Loomis-Chaffee 7-0 Kingswood-Oxford

The Wyverns lost their second straight when facing the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans on Wednesday.  Loomis, now with a three-game win streak, progresses to 5-5.  So far this year, K.O. has only swept or been swept by their opponents—all results have been 7-0 or 0-7 throughout the 2013-2014 Season.

Taft 6-1 Kent

In the closest match on the day, Taft defeated a Kent team with a 2-6 overall record.

Taft’s #1 Brendan Chuilli (’14) fell to Kent’s #1 Abdelrahman ElSergany (’15) in a 1-3 set game.  The rest of Taft’s players were able to achieve victory on the day though.

The Rhinos are now 8-2 on the season while Kent is now 2-6.

Deerfield 7-0 Westminster

The Green Doors once again showcased their skilled squash abilities against Westminster on Wednesday.  The Martlets could not defeat any of their opponents on the day and Deerfield increased their record to 11-1.

Westminster is now 8-2 on the season and will face Founders League opponent Choate on Saturday in addition to Phillips Academy and Belmont School in a quad-meet.

Basketball: Hotchkiss stays hot; TP sneaks by Avon and more

Screen Shot 2014-01-23 at 7.31.26 PMHotchkiss 61-52 Kent

Kent traveled to Hotchkiss in what would be a competitive Founders League game, and the Bearcats prevailed the victors. This victory allowed Hotchkiss to grab their seventh consecutive win, improving to 11-1 (4-1 in league play) as they continue to contend for first place in the league.

On the other hand, Kent looks to rebound from this loss which put them at 6-6 (2-3 in league play), when they continue their long line of away games by traveling to the Master’s School this Saturday.

Trinity-Pawling 59-54 Avon

Trinity-Pawling retained their spot atop of the Founders League with a win over Avon this past Wednesday. A close game throughout, the Pride was able to finish strong against a tough Avon team. This becomes TP’s sixth consecutive league win, moving them to 12-2 (6-0 in league play) overall.

Avon looks to bounce back against their rival Westminster in what should be an exciting battle. Trinity-Pawling will head to Taft for another Founders League clash on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Choate 59-57 Gunnery

In a non-Founders League matchup for Choate, the Wild Boars were able to grind out an exciting 2-point victory over the Gunnery. With this win, it has only added to the long string of success this season for Choate, who remain undefeated at 9-0 (4-0 in league play). Choate looks to continue their winning ways when they travel to Kingswood-Oxford this Friday.

Kingswood-Oxford 54-77 Cheshire Academy

This Wednesday, Kingswood-Oxford hosted Cheshire Academy in a game where the Fighting Cats’ scoring could not be contained. This loss marks the Wyvern’s sixth in a row, making them 1-9 on the season. KO looks to get their season back on track by hosting the undefeated Wild Boars of Choate this Friday.

Loomis 45-66 Deerfield

In what became a rematch of a previous game this year where Loomis won, Deerfield avenged their previous loss to LC. The Pelicans record is now 4-5 but have a three-game home stand coming their way. Loomis certainly hopes to right their ship by looking to rack up victories on their home court.

Taft 66-64 Berkshire

This out-of-league game for Taft proved to be a nail-biter for the Rhinos, but resulted in a victory nonetheless. A hard fought victory brought Taft their second victory over Berkshire this season, but the Rhinos are still looking for their first win in Founders League play.

Taft hopes to build off this close game when they matchup against Canterbury this Friday at 4:45 PM.

Westminster 36-71 Salisbury

Westminster was simply outmatched in their game against Salisbury on Wednesday. The Knights controlled the floor from the first to last whistle, the margin of victory an indicator of the battle on the court.

Westminster now stands 6-6 (1-3 in league play) and will be looking to recover from this loss as they get a shot on their home court against local rivals Avon. The Martlets will be hoping to build some momentum for the rest of their season.

Hockey: Kent hits six, TP grabs away win and more

ChristmasClassic-3_zpscfa0e1f6Taft 1-6 Kent

Kent dominated yet another game today, defeating Taft by a final score of 6-1 with all six goals coming from different scorers.

This impressive stat has become a trend for the Lions, which speaks to the depth of their team this season. Kent has now grabbed 32 goals in the last five games while only allowing seven.

Stephen Morrissey had another big game between the pipes with 34 saves and a .971 save percentage.

Next up for Kent is 2:30PM matchup at Westminster on Saturday. For Taft, they travel to Trinity-Pawling on Friday for a 7:00PM face-off with the Pride.

Choate 2-5 Trinity-Pawling

Visitors Trinity-Pawling defeated Choate today by the final score of 5-2. For Choate, it’s their first loss since the 21st of December.

For Trinity-Pawling, this win make it three straight. They’ll look to continue this success heading into their Friday night game at home against Taft. Up next for Choate, an away test on Saturday night against Avon.

Loomis 4-5 OT Avon

Avon defeated Loomis in dramatic fashion on an overtime goal from Jake Gresh today (Liam Murphy with the assist) condemned Loomis to a home defeat. Loomis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Winged Beavers responded with two of their own by the end of the 1st period.

Loomis fought to the final whistle, and the pressure paid off as the Pelicans tied the game at 4-4 with only 0:07 seconds left in regulation through Mitch Van Gameren.

The game went into overtime, and Avon scored with just 0:40 seconds remaining.

Tucker Weppner played strong in goal for Avon with 32 saves. Seth McCormick checked in with two goals for the Pelicans, but it wasn’t going to be the difference as the visiting team walked away with the win.

Next up for the Winged Beavers is a meeting with Choate at home on Saturday night. And for Loomis, they’ll play Kingswood-Oxford tomorrow afternoon.

Westminster 5-2 Deerfield

Westminster led Deerfield 3-2 after the first period, but that’s all they would need on the day as the Martlets never looked back.

After jumping out to a string start in the beginning of the year, Deerfield has lost four out of their last five games. For Westminster, they’ve won five of their last six.

They’ll look to continue this streak heading into their massive 3:00PM matchup with Kent this Saturday afternoon at home. And for Deerfield, they’ll play Hotchkiss at home Saturday night at 6:00PM.

Berkshire 6-0 Hotchkiss

Hotchkiss’ tough hockey season continued as the 2-12 Bearcats suffered an unfortunate home loss to Berkshire.

George Blinick (’14) stood between the pipes for Berkshire, as Hotchkiss looked to pick up its first win since the Flood Marr Tournament in late December.

Hotchkiss will look to bounce back against a Deerfield squad that is also having a little trouble finding the right result. The Big Green hosts the contest this Saturday at 6:00PM.

Hockey: Kent topples Salisbury, Westy streaking and more

Screen Shot 2014-01-09 at 6.15.47 PMIn a weekend headlined by a clash with Salisbury visiting Kent, the two prep school powerhouses faced off with unfortunate results for one. Elsewhere, Westminster gave the visiting Loomis Chaffee a horrid time with a 5-2 win.

Here’s how the action around the league panned out:

Kent 6-2 Salisbury

Tabbed as the game to watch in the preamble to the weekend action, Kent sent Salisbury packing with a thorough 6-2 win.

1-1 after the 1st frame, Kent controlled the 2nd period, netting three goals through Anthony Rinaldi (’14),  Philip Klitirinos (’14), and Josh Hardiman (’15). Rinaldi initially broke the deadlock, and Klitirinos and Hardiman capitalized in the dying seconds to make it 3-1 going into the 3rd. Kent continued to pile on the pressure, and it paid off when Hardiman turned provider in the final period as he fed Zerter (2 goals), who fired the puck top-shelf for a convincing lead.

Salisbury’s Kale Kane and Will Toffey both snagged goals in the midst of the Kent goal flurry to try and bring Salisbury back into the contest, but it was to no avail.

Salisbury is now 0-1-2 in the last three games, and this loss marks the first of the season. Next up is a trip to Choate on Monday. Kent will travel to Hotchkiss looking to extend its eight-game winning streak.

Westminster 5-2 Loomis Chaffee

Despite a tense 1st period that ended 1-1 between the two teams, Westy took control in the 2nd, putting away four more goals to make the scoreline 4-1 in favor of the home team. Between frames, LC coach John Zavisza pulled his starting goalie Nick DeSimone and threw James Cox between the pipes in an effort to stop the Martlet scoring frenzy.

While Westy was only able to sneak one goal in past Cox, it was in vain as the Martlets claimed a 5-2 win at home.

Loomis was riding a three-game undefeated streak coming into the game, but the Martlets sent them back to the drawing board. The Pelicans will look to bounce back with a home game against Avon Old Farms next Wednesday. On the other end, Westminster continues its hot streak.

Berkshire 3-2 OT AvonBeSz7wtCYAA-rgo

The Winged Beavers looked to bounce back from a disappointing 2-3 loss at NMH from earlier in the week but couldn’t overcome the Berkshire Bears in overtime. Avon succumbed to a second consecutive 2-3 defeat to move below .500 on the season.

Avon led 2-1 going into the 3rd period thanks to Sam Levin and Jake Gresh but couldn’t close out in OT.

Next up for Avon is a trip to Loomis Chaffee, which will conclude the Winged Beavers’ three-game away run.

Choate 3-2 Deerfield

Choate took a win away from a home game against Deerfield. The Big Green has had a hot and cold season up to now, and this loss to Choate does little to quell those assertions.

Choate got out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the 1st frame and never looked back. The Wild Boars tacked on another before Deerfield’s Lafferty grabbed one back to make it 3-1. Lafferty then played the provider as he fed Lackner in the 3rd period to give Choate something to worry about.

However, a comeback was not on the cards, and the Big Green walked away with a loss.

Trinity-Pawling 3-3 Salisbury

Trinity-Pawling netted the equalizer in a wild game with only 0:38 seconds to play in regulation. Despite opening the scoring in the game, the Pride was soon behind 3-1 to Salisbury. However, a flurry of action before the end of the 3rd saw TP push hard for an opening, and they found two — both were shorthanded.

Johnny Coughlin (’14) had intially put the Pride ahead, but the Knights stormed back to take a 3-1 lead early in the final frame. Despite a penalty with two minutes to go, TP wasn’t out of it yet, as Devin Brink (’14) broke away and slotted home for a 3-2 scoreline. Brink then turned provider as he found Dan Kuter (’15) cross ice, and the defenseman put away the puck for a dramatic equalizer.

Trinity-Pawling netminder Matt Michaels finished the day with 47 saves from 50 shots and a 0.94 save percentage. At the other end, Salisbury’s Dominic Sorgio saw only 15 shots and allowed three goals, giving him a 0.80 save percentage.

Canterbury 1-3 Westminster

Despite a rocky start to the season, Westminster has been rolling lately, winning three out of its last four (the exception being the 2-2 tie against Salisbury).

The Martlets traveled to Canterbury yesterday and walked away with a solid 3-1 win over the hosts. CJ Grinnell was the only Saint player to find the back of the net, and it came back to cost them as Westy walked away with the win.

Westy and Loomis battle this Saturday at 2:30PM.

Hotchkiss 3-8 Kent

The Lions are on a roll. Having not suffered a loss since December 8th, when Kent lost 3-4 to Phillips Exeter. Following that game, the Lions have only allowed 13 goals while putting away 44.

The highlights for Wednesday’s game can be found below. Enjoy.

Next up for Kent is the big-time game against Salisbury this weekend.

Northfield Mount Hermon 3-2 Avon Old Farms

Avon suffered its second consecutive defeat to NMH on Wednesday as the Winged Beavers looked to bounce back from a tough 1-6 home loss to Kent.

Despite Avon coming out with a 2-0 lead, the Hoggers fought back to 2-2 before the end of the 2nd period. Avon couldn’t close out the game as NMH grabbed the eventual game-winner in the 3rd period to knock the Winged Beavers’ overall record back to 5-5-1 on the season.

Next up for Avon is an away clash at Berkshire this Saturday at 2:30PM.

Berkshire 1-1 Choate

Choate has been stringing together some good results lately, but the Wild Boars couldn’t take a win away from Berkshire on Wednesday as the two teams slugged out a 1-1 draw.

Berkshire’s Charlie Corcoran ’14 had the goal for the Bears, but it wasn’t enough to see the home team dispatch Choate and the two teams split the result. That makes back-to-back ties for the Wild Boars as they finished a 2-2 tie with Taft last weekend.

Choate hosts Deerfield on Saturday in a big-time Housatonic League matchup. Puck drops at 5:00PM.

Loomis Chaffee 2-2 Taft

Ties have been in abundance the last few weeks as the parity of the Housatonic League is coming to the surface. For the second straight week, Taft has finished a game in a 2-2 tie, this time with Loomis Chaffee.

Taft struck first early and added a second shorthanded goal not long after to put the Rhinos up 2-0. However, Loomis fought back with two power-play goals through Matt O’Donnell to draw level.

Next up for the Taft is Canterbury at 4:00PM, and Loomis takes on Westminster at 2:30PM.

Kimball Union 3-5 DeerfieldBeDqUb0IMAA2pi_

The Big Green grabbed a solid win yesterday over Kimball Union Academy. Trevor Yates continued his good run of form for Deerfield as he put the visiting team on the board. Similarly, Sam Lafferty (2 goals, 1 assist), Kevin Doyle (1 goal, 2 assist), and David Lackner (1 goal, 1 assist) all played big roles in the result.

Deerfield goalie Jake Kahler was 39 for 42 to earn a .928  save percentage.

Hockey: Choate building steam, TP continues long week & more

With a few games this week already in the books, Trinity-Pawling looks to continue its jam-packed, four-game week with a home clash against the undefeated Salisbury at 4:30PM. However, it’s hard to look past Saturday’s game between Kent and Salisbury, as two of the most dominant teams in prep school hockey this season hit the ice. The first time these teams met the game resulted in a hard-fought 2-2 tie.

Here’s what the rest of the week looks like:

Hockey: Westy ties Salisbury, TP sneaks away win and more

photo (1)Two evenly-played matches headlined a number of exciting games for Founders League hockey over the weekend. Here’s how the action panned out:

Salisbury 2-2 Westminster

Westminster tied Salisbury in possibly the biggest surprise of the day. Coming into the game, Salisbury was 9-0-1, tying Kent back in December.

Though Salisbury went up 2-0 with 2 goals in quick succession in the 2nd period, Westy fought back and eventually tied the game with a goal from Mario Benicky in the 2nd and the equalizer through Taggart Corriveau with only 2:36 to play in the 3rd.

Dylan Holze and Vimal Sukumaran had initially put the Knights up 2-0, but in the end, neither side could break through in overtime, and the two teams split the result.

Deerfield 2-3 Trinity-Pawling

Trinity Pawling pulled out a big win against league rival Deerfield. They have a tough game upcoming, as Salisbury will visit on Wednesday.

The Pride took the lead in the 1st period, but Deerfield’s Lafferty evened things up on a powerplay goal in the 2nd. Trinity-Pawling was able to hang two more goals on the Big Green in the 3rd period to take the win, despite a consolation goal from Deerfield’s Yates to make it 2-3 in favor of the visitors.

Choate 2-2 Taft

Taft traveled to Choate for this Founders League matchup over the weekend. Taft led early, putting up two before Choate rallied back and put netted one before scoring the tying goal with 23 seconds left in regulation. Neither side wanted to let up in the five-minute overtime, and the game ended 2-2.

Avon 1-6 Kent

Kent easily put away Avon in the second meeting of these two Founders League teams. As usual, Kent was lead by their senior goalie, Stephen Morrissey, who made 24 of 25 saves. Seniors also led Kent’s offense, scoring 5 of the 6 Kent goals. Phillip Klitirinos, James Ricciardi, Satchel Clendenin, Mitch Allen, Brendan Soucie (2 goals) completed the scoring for the Lions on the day.

Kent has been hot ever since winning the Christmas Classic; they have beat each of the 3 teams they played by a goal differential of an impressive five or more goals. Look for the clash on Saturday between them and undefeated Salisbury, as it will be the game of the week.

Loomis Chaffee 3-1 Hotchkiss

Hotchkiss had a tough road game against the Pelicans of Loomis Chaffee. F Benjamin Sharf had put Loomis up one before the Bearcats leveled with under a minute to go in the 1st period. Loomis’ Cory Swift also notched a goal of his own in the contest, and that would prove to be beyond the means of Hotchkiss as the Pelicans walked away with the win.

Loomis looks to keep momentum going into a stretch where they will face four more Founders League teams over the next two weeks. Hotchkiss will face another tough squad this Wednesday, playing Kent at home.

Worcester Academy 4-2 Kingswood-Oxford

KO lost 2-4 on the road against out-of-league team Worcester Academy. They have two tough games in the upcoming week, playing Westminster on Tuesday, followed by Trinity-Pawling on Saturday.

Basketball: Hotchkiss dismantles Taft, TP edges out Kent, and more

The basketball season trudged on this weekend with Founders League teams looking for crucial wins. This is how it all happened:

Hotchkiss 56-37 Taft

Hotchkiss traveled to Taft Saturday to play the Rhinos, a team still looking for their first league win. Hotchkiss had no problem denying them that accomplishment, cruising to a 19-point victory. The Bearcats dominated the boards, picking up 20 offensive rebounds. Taft looks to rebound themselves from their four-game losing streak when they travel to the Gunnery on Monday. Hotchkiss looks to extend its four-game winning streak on Monday when they host Avon.

TP 55-50 Kent

Kent traveled across the boarder to NY Saturday looking to pick up consecutive wins for only the second time this season. TP aimed to keep up the momentum of their 5 game winning streak, and did just that. TP extended their streak to 6, and did so off senior Braedon Bayer’s two late three’s and Justin Cooper’s 19 points. Kent hopes to get back in the win column Wednesday home against Milbrook.

TP 50-69 Blair Academy

In their second contest of the weekend, TP suffered a setback, losing to Blair by 19 points. TP has until Wednesday to recover from this loss when they travel to Avon Old Farms.

Westminster 63-60 Canterbury

Canterbury started off their two-game weekend by traveling to Simbury, CT for a game against Westy. The Saints saw a 9-point lead with under 3 minutes to play disappear as Westy stormed back to take the W. Westminster will head to Loomis on Wednesday looking for their first conference win of the year.

Avon 64-53 Canterbury

Avon and Canterbury faced off at Tufts University Saturday for the Hoop Dream Magazine Prep Classic. Avon took this matchup by 11 points for their first winning streak of the season at two games. Avon goes for three in a row Monday when they travel to western Connecticut to take on the Bearcats of Hotchkiss.

Squash: Hotchkiss collects two wins, Taft rolls on and more

11817Saturday was full of terrific squash matches throughout the Founders League.  Some close victories and upsetting defeats provided for close competition from every school.

Hotchkiss 4-3 Packer Collegiate

The Bearcats battled a strong Packer Collegiate team on Saturday and came out victorious.  Hotchkiss’s top three of Perry Hanson, Jamie Havran, and Dylan Kachur all lost their bouts to Packer Collegiate’s top three Andrew Douglas, David Pincus, and Cameron Ewan.

These were extremely close matches all around.  It was Hotchkiss’s bottom four who were able to pull them out of a major deficit.  The co-men of the match were Ovie Ojeni and Joseph Harris because of their victorious efforts in five-game matches.  The Bearcats are on a three game win streak and look to beat Berkshire Monday.

Hotchkiss 7-0 Loomis Chaffee

Hotchkiss swept Loomis this weekend and showcased how talented their team is this year.  Loomis has now lost three straight matches but hopes to improve against Choate on Monday.  Hotchkiss now has a record of 5-1 but has several talented foes to face down the road.

Taft 3-2 Deefield

In a bit of an upset, Taft took down the long-successful Deerfield squash program on Saturday.  Coley Cannon and Brandon Salvatore won 3-0 for the Rhinos at #4 and #5, and James Fulham sealed the win with a victory at #2.  Taft was able to win big this weekend finishing at 3-0 on the day.  The Rhinos made a statement defeating the Green Doors and future opponents should be weary.

Choate Invitational

Taft 5-0 Trinity College School in Ontario

Taft easily dispatched the Canadian team in their first match of the tournament.

Taft 4-1 Salisbury

Salisbury was defeated by the Rhinos.  The Scarlet Knights have one returner this year as well as a new coach.  Taft was able to defeat the out of league opponents easily.

Trinity-Pawling 3-4 Wilston

The Pride won the matches for the top three spots against Wilston, but could not pull out a victory in the bottom four matches.  Trinity-Pawling, unfortunately, is now at 0-4 on the season, but hopes to defeat the Canterbury Saints at Canterbury this upcoming week.

Westminster 7-0 Kent

Westminster blanked Kent on Saturday in a lop-sided match.  The Martlets advance to 6-1 and will play league rivals Avon Old Farms on Wednesday.  Westminster has a five-game win streak, the current longest streak in the Founders, which they hope to build on against the Winged Beavers.

Avon Old Farms 6-1 Pomfret

The Winged Beavers were able to trump Pomfret on Saturday.  Avon won their top six matches and easily took care of their out of league opponents.  Pomfret was able to best Avon last year but could not get the same result this time around.  Seif Attia, Karim Tarek, Abdelrahman Mahmoud, Atticus Kelly, and Henry Smith all won their matches 3-0.  Reid White won his match 3-2, and Peter Murphy lost 0-3 for the Winged Beavers.  Avon Old Farms is the lone undefeated team at 3-0.
