It was another action-packed weekend in the rink. All eight Founders League hockey teams hit the ice for prime action, including back-to-back games for Loomis on Friday and Saturday. Each team knows time is running out to grab the important victories to earn a spot in the Super 8. Here is a review of the weekend hockey action:
Friday: Taft 6-7 Trinity-Pawling
The Pride hosted Taft in a primetime, high-scoring affair in New York. The Rhinos made the long trek to Pawling looking for a much needed comeback victory after being routed by Kent on Wednesday.
The action broke loose in the third. After the Rhinos struck first just 10 seconds into the frame to make it, it looked like TP was deflated, and Taft was headed back to Wallingford with a “W.” But the Pride stuck with their game and opened the scoring barrage. Unbelievably, TP scored twice in just 6 seconds with goals from junior Connor McNamara and senior Jay Lamot. All of a sudden, the game had a blank slate.
Trinity-Pawling’s seniors stepped up to the plate, as the 4 unanswered goals for the Pride game them the 6-4 lead. They wouldn’t look back and over-powered Taft in a 7-6 game with no shortage of scoring.
Taft had initially come out strong, outplaying TP in the first to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room. However, there was plenty more scoring ahead for these squads.
In the second, the scoring continued at a steady pace, as Taft maintained their lead and took a 3-2 lead to the break with 18 minutes remaining in this contest.
The win gave TP their 4th consecutive victory, with a Monday matchup at Hotchkiss coming up.
Westminster 2-4 Kent
Kent took to the roads to battle Westminster in Simsbury for a matchup between two top teams. The Lions entered the game with an unreal 10-game win streak, dating back to the first matchup of the Avon Christmas Classic. Westy came into the game unbeaten in there previous 6 games (5-0-1) and looked to stay hot after a rough start to the season.
A back-and-forth contest, the Founders League foes slugged out a tough match all the way up to the 3rd period. Anthony Rinaldi opened the scoring in the first period, giving Kent a 1-0 edge after the first frame. After the Martlets tied it early in the second, Kent wasted no time regaining their lead. Anthony Ricciardi’s power play goal gave the Lions the 2-1 lead.
The seesaw would continue, as Westminster tied the game up at 2 before the 2nd period ended. However, Kent’s powerful offense was too much for Westy, adding the go-ahead goal, a snipe from Krisberg, in the third period and the empty-netter to take the 4-2 victory. Kent extends their win streak to 11 games, as Westminster’s is snapped at 4.
Kent will return home to face Taft on Wednesday. The Lions previously topped the Rhinos 6-1 in an earlier meeting in Wallingford.
Phillips Academy 2-2 Loomis Chaffee
The Pelicans took the long bus ride to Andover, MA for an inter-conference matchup against the boys from Phillips Academy.
Loomis got off to a shaky start; neither team was able to light the lamp in the first period. The struggles continued for the Pelicans as the Big Blue struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd period. The first 36 minutes of the game would close that way as it Loomis was struggling to find the back of the net.
After Rob Devaney found twine for Andover to make it a 2-0 game, the Pelicans began to fight back. Two quick goals for Loomis to end the 3rd period forced OT at a 2-2 tie.
Neither team was able to score in OT, and the game ended in a draw. Loomis, who trounced KO 11-0 on Wednesday, will host Williston on January 29th for a second straight inter-conference matchup.
Taft 6-1 Kingswood-Oxford
Coming off of a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to TP the previous day, the Rhinos traveled to West Hartford to take on a struggling opponent in KO.
Taft started off the scoring in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead over the Wyverns to the break. It appeared that KO’s struggle to score goals was going to haunt them yet again in this game.
However, Kingswood-Oxford hung in with Taft, tying the game at 1 in the second period and keeping the game knotted at the end of the second period. KO, looking for their first Housatonic League victory, was hanging in with the Rhinos.
Who knows what happened to Taft in the 2nd intermission, because the Rhinos stormed onto the ice in the 3rd. 5 goals in the third period, including one short-handed goal broke the game out in the final frame. Taft bounced back from their loss the previous night and took the victory over KO 6-1.
KO will look to bounce back with a game on Wednesday against Rye Country Day School, a team they beat 9-2 earlier in the season. On the other hand, Taft will look to use this momentum as they travel to top-ranked Kent on Wednesday.
Hotchkiss vs. Deerfield: Canceled due to power outage.
Avon 2-5 Choate
Choate traveled into Avon to take on the Winged Beavers last night in a highly-anticipated rivalry matchup.
Avon started off slow, as 2 goals from Joey Caffrey and Jeremy Germain gave Choate a quick 2-0 lead.
The second showed more of the same, as Avon was pounded in their own zone by the quick forwards of the Wild Boars. Eventually, the pressure amounted into third and fourth goals for Choate, this time from David Barnish and Captain Owen Powers. It appeared that it was not the night for the Winged Beavers. 4-1 after 2.
In the third, Avon was able to mount a semi-comeback, after sophomore Liam Murphy scored another goal in the third to cut the Choate lead to 4-2. Unfortunately for Avon, Choate’s Germain scored his 2nd with under 3 minutes left to close the game out at 5-2.
Avon will look to respond when they host rivals Westminster on Wednesday afternoon.
For Choate, they play their second of a 4 game road trip when the travel to Hotchkiss on Wednesday.
